Traverse City Police Search for Assault Suspect

Traverse City police are on the hunt for a man who accosted a woman and her child at the Cass Street tunnel on the evening of September 1. The female victim, age 31, reported that she had been walking in the Clinch Park area with her nine-month-old daughter, who was in a stroller, when the male suspect approached and asked the time. He walked away and met up with another female, but then circled back as the victim neared the tunnel, heading toward Cass Street. The victim stated she had a bad feeling about the male and had retrieved a canister of pepper spray from her purse, which she held in her hand. As she entered the tunnel, the male suspect approached her quickly from behind and grabbed onto her, attempting to twist her around. The victim said she sprayed the suspect with the pepper spray; he yelled, “I just want your returnables!" The victim then ran away through the south end of the tunnel. The suspect is described as a white male of average height and medium build, with dark hair described as very “crazy” in nature. The victim and her daughter were uninjured in the incident. Anyone with information on this incident is asked to contact the Traverse City Police Department’s Detective Bureau: 231-995-5151.
