Very interesting story of the history of electric power in Traverse City. However, you and most people give too much credit to Edison and not enought to Nikola Tesla who invented the 3 phase, alternating power system that we use. That system allows for the efficient transmission of electricity through the use of transformers, with no moving parts, to step up and step down the voltage. It also provides for simplified electric motors. Edison stuck with his direct current system which lost out to the alternating current system developed by Westinghouse.
