Delayed Hope for Food Cart Vendors, Closed Session for Knudsen Case

The TC City Commission deferred action last night on reducing daily fees for transient food merchants outside the downtown district until its Sept. 3 meeting – action that would have reversed an earlier resolution to double the fees to $100 daily. The city clerk had recommended that the recent increase from $50 to $100 per day only apply to peddlers downtown, as well as establish quarterly and annual rates. Several questions raised by commissioners, however, delayed any motion while clarifications are sought by city staff. Also, last night the commission entered into closed session at the end of the meeting to discuss the trial and settlement issue surrounding the estate of Michael Knudsen, the young man who died while swimming in Clinch Marina in August 2011. The City of Traverse City is named in the $50 million lawsuit.

I would tend to agree with the majority posting. As someone who frequents downtown restaurants quite often, I don't personally see food carts/trucks as drawing many customers away from fixed restaurants. We are blessed to have an abundance of fabulous and truly "foodie-friendly" locations to choose from. I think there is need and room for both.

We really do need to get with the times! A food truck disturbing business' like Phil's and Red Ginger etc...? Give me a break. What about Friday night live, should they not offer food? Two different clients people. And yes I too have been downtown and refused to wait 2 hours for a table so how are these types of establishments being hurt by the food truck?

Studies have shown that food vendors do more to attract people to downtown and create a vibrant and lively atmosphere. It was just reported in the Ticker that downtown businesses enjoyed record sales this summer so I don't think doors will be closing anytime soon. Just this past week, we tried to go out to eat downtown and there was over an hour wait at 2 restaurants. Food vendors are needed for added options so people and families can enjoy inexpensive and convenient food. It seems all too often the City caves to a few downtown businesses and fails to look at the community as a whole.

I too appreciate the convenience of mobile food carts and their festive aire. However, the food cart option draws potential customers away from the fixed restaurants who pay for expensive, prime commercial property and higher taxes to be dowtown; whether it is Subway, Red Ginger, Phil's on Front, etc...so I can see the other side of the coin and where it drops is important....we want to keep the current restaurants right?...well, they need the business too. How about food/beverage carts at the public beaches instead of downtown? Where they would be most needed it seems.

I too, miss the Pita Pitstop. Lets support our food carts! Traverse City needs to be more food friendly.

I hope they lower the fees. With people out of work, food carts are a way for them to bring in some money for their family. I miss the Pita Pitstop so much!!!!!

This would be wonderful. The Pita Pitstop makes fresh healthy food, this should be supported. Grand Rapids, Detroit and other cities support food carts, come on TC get with the times!!!
