The Snow Day/Summer Vacation Tipping Point

The Snow Day/Summer Vacation Tipping Point

Hey kids, be careful what you wish for.

Any more snow days this year will mean a shorter summer vacation for Traverse City Area Public Schools students.

The state allows public schools to take up to six snow days per year before they start having to make them up at the end of the season. TCAPS reached that limit when they called off school on Friday.

“Kids might like their snow days today, but they’re not going to like it in June” if there are more weather-related holidays between now and then, says Paul Soma, chief financial officer for the district.

As it stands, June 11 will be the district’s last day of classes – a half day – though the five weekdays from June 13 through June 19 are designated as emergency makeup days just in case.

Soma often gets asked about the financial impact of canceling a day in the winter and adding one in the summer.

“It’s basically a wash,” he says. “You may save a little because you’re not heating the building in June, but it’s so marginal that it’s really pointless.” Soma add that as soon as a snow day is declared, an official turns the heat down in classrooms remotely.

Traverse City’s six snow days so far – actually it’s 6.5 days, taking into account a day that was cut short halfway through because of inclement weather in December – is not the district record. There were eight snow days in both 1978-79 and in 1995-96, says Cindy Berck, director of human resources.

Some districts outside of TCAPS have posted even more snow days. Within the Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District, Forest Area has closed eight times, while Bellaire, Benzie Central and Buckley have had seven each. Suttons Bay has closed only three days.

The long-term weather forecast? More snow but warming temperatures, though virtually every northern Michigan winter has seen a late season storm.

WOW! Teachers really can't catch a break from those who seek out every opportunity to bash and trash them. To turn an article about school closings caused by the weather to an attack on teachers and the union is a stretch at best.

Bobby- the "simpletons" you refer to PAY for it all, NOT the UNION! If the teachers had more reguard for TEACHING and less for thier own paid days off, then they would agree that MORE TIME IN SCHOOL is better, not less and the MEAP scores would be higher.....

More union/teacher bashing from simpletons who would rather blather online than pick up a phone, call the administration and get the straight answer regarding how a school calendar is put together.

Here's an idea that's sure to p-o teachers: Contingently plan the "in service" days on snow days. The private sector has to work when it snows, why not the teachers? I know some teachers that are as giddy as the kids when schools are closed.

What happened to the two hour delay? Most of our snow days could have been handled by a delay vs. an entire day off. Also, I understand concern for the side roads, but out in our area the busses no longer go on side roads, kids are all picked up on main roads. Eliminating some the frivolous days off and long holiday breaks would certainly help!!

This year the calls have been extremely "soft" (example, 3 inches of snow and 5 degrees out) - who cares, noone freezes in 15 minutes at a bus stop, dress appropriately. What are the criteria and WHO makes the call, it's been ridiculous lately and some say due to privitization of bussing. Realizing that much extra-curricular logistics must change, the 1or 2 hour delay REALLY NEEDS to be brought back. Also - some cities have inclement weather bus route to avoid snow days (what a concept)! Snow days (unless true weather emergency) don't serve anyone well - educationally, safety etc.

We are closed for the 9th day today in Manton--some are saying we will extend the day a few minutes to make it up? How does that work?

Jon on February 11, 2013 7:56am

Why not simply shorten the christmas time and spring vacation lenghts.
So what if the union has a problem with that--they work for US and the REASON they have jobs in the first place is to TEACH. It would seem plausable that the MORE days spent in school would be better.
How about dropping the football program altogether and use those funds to pay for air conditioning and send them to school year around?
