TEDx Traverse City Returns, With Second Venue

TEDxTraverseCity, which sold out in less than 30 minutes last year, will return to Traverse City on May 15, this time adding a second venue to accommodate a larger audience. TEDxTraverseCity will be held on May 15 from 8:30am to 5:00pm in the Milliken Auditorium at Northwestern Michigan College (NMC).

The 2012 TEDx event's success prompted organizers to decide to simulcast this year’s event at the State Theatre. Tickets for the NMC event will be $99 each. State Theatre simulcast tickets will be $50 each.

TEDx events combine live and video speakers to spark discussions about topics of the day. TEDx is an offshoot of TED (Technology, Entertainment and Design), a global nonprofit founded in 1984. Hundreds of TEDx events have been held around the world since its inception.

The day-long TEDxTraverseCity is intended to “educate, inspire and connect great minds.”

This year’s theme – Time and Change – will also incorporate sub-themes of Transformational Change, Futurism and Embracing the Human Condition. Twelve speakers will headline the day, including:

  • New York Times bestselling author Marianne Williamson
  • South Bronx-based green educator Stephen Ritz
  • 2012 CNN Humanitarian Hero Twesigye “Jackson” Kaguri
  • Crisis mapper and innovator Patrick Meier
  • Author and director of the environment program at the Political Economy Research Institute James Boyce
  • Founding Master Teacher at the Acton School of Business Steven Tomlinson

Additional speakers will be added in the coming months. The event will also include musical performances by an Interlochen Arts Academy percussion ensemble and local musicians Blake Elliott, Don Julin and Billy Strings.

Sara Harding, one of the event’s curators, tells The Ticker, “We are honored to be going into our third year with a line-up of top-tier speakers that will be sure to push boundaries and provide significant inspiration to the attendees.”

Harding adds that a new advisory board has also been formed this year, including several local leaders in education, business, and philanthropy.

TEDxTraverseCity tickets go on sale April 8. Visit www.tedxtraversecity.com for more information.

So much of the most important work being done today is being done by poor people. At $50 and $100 a pop, the conference begins with a serious bias--those with money are in the know and have the solutions. The approach is biased towards a top-down and entrepreneurial approach, an approach that is very much responsible for many of the social ills this conference seeks to address. This is not helpful.

Suckers are born daily... Tedx is little more than a book tour for pseudo-intellectuals.

Great news! It would seem appropriate to have Michigan represented at the talks. Surely, there are many talented, visionary people in our community and the state of Michigan. I'm not sure why the State feels the need to charge $50 for tickets. This is a great idea but it should be o9ffered at a lower cost to attract college students on a low income as well as adults who simply cannot afford $50. Thank you.

I was SO excited to hear that TedX was returning this year. Thought I might have a chance to attend; but, as is the usual thing for TC, I am priced out of the market. $99 or $50 is an obscene charge for an event which is supposed to bring out many voices and points of view, but is effectively closed to those of us on fixed income. TC's cultural life is becoming available to our "1 percent" only.

Too bad I will have to take a day off of work to try to attend.....why not offer on a weekend day?
Seems like you are curtailing this session to a small group of people who are financially able to swing this "talented and inspiring people" gathering.

Angie,
All speakers will be physically present in the Milliken Auditorium, but not at the State Theater simulcast.

We're looking forward to welcoming several Michigan speakers this year as well as many others that are nationally and internationally-recognized.

Please visit tedxtraversecity.com for more information- we're excited to welcome you to the event!

Very cool! I'm excited to hear the rest of the lineup and for keeping this great event going in our community:)

It is the 21st century, does it matter if they are physically here?

You can get a college degree without leaving your living room. One of the best benifits of technology is the sharing of ideas from across the country and globe without having to be physically present.

Nick Nerbonne on February 14, 2013 8:25am

I hope the organizers will consider including at least one speaker from Michigan this year. It would be great to feature some of the talented and inspiring people we have right here in our backyard.

Angie Lemon on February 14, 2013 7:41am

Will all of the speakers be physically at this event?
