TCAPS Tonight: Sex Ed, New Trail, Property Sale Negotiations, more

The board of the Traverse City Area Public Schools meets tonight. Highlights of the agenda: potential changes to TCAPS' sex education for ninth through 12th grade students; the recommendation of signing on with and incorporating the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program for students age 5 to 15; forming a lease agreement with Garfield Township to construct, operate and improve the 2.7-mile Buffalo Ridge Trail. The trail would run from the new south campus entrance to the Grand Traverse Commons (Silver Road), cross Silver Lake Road, and run south along Franke Road (behind Meijer), offering a mostly car-free path to West Middle School, the new YMCA, Kid's Creek Park, and more. Finally, the board will dicuss empowering Superintendent Steve Cousins and someone he designates to negotiate any future offers on the open Thirteenth Street property (across from Thirlby Field) owned by TCAPS. The school district has received two unsolicited bids, as well as a solicited proposal for the property in the last 15 months. Any finalized negotiations would still need to obtain board approval before being accepted. Watch the meeting live at 6:00 p.m. in the Tompkins Boardman Administration Center at 412 Webster Street or on channel 98.

Sex education for high school age children? Isn't that a bit late?
There students have been having sex from the beginning of Junior High.
What do you plan on teaching them that they haven't already tried.
Perhaps the Joy of "Gay" sex, Oral and Anal sex as an safety measure for the prevention of pregnancy? How about the in's and out's of same sex action. TCAPS is having trouble teaching the students to read & wright, let alone add & subtract. We need teachers and administrators who live in the real world.

I find it amazing that while schools are complaining about a lack of funding for teachers, books and needed materials, TCAPS wants to spend money on trails and other nonsense during this bad economy. Another reason to vote NO on the TCAPS millage this Nov.

They should NOT sell the Thirlby property. It should be made into a parking lot which could be used by Glen Loomis School (staff & parents) and used as a parking lot for events at Thirlby (charge a nominal parking fee). The parking/pick up situation around Glenn Loomis is horrible and unsafe. Many parents disregard traffic signs at pick up - park at the stop sign, stop and wait where they aren't supposed to, kids cross all over the place. they take over the streets, alleys and the parking lot at Trinity. Only a matter of time before a student gets hit by a car.
