Two Pedestrians Struck by Car
Just before 6 p.m. on October 27, Traverse City police responded to the intersection at 11th and Cass streets, where two pedestrians had been struck crossing crossing Cass Street by a vehicle driven by an 18-year-old Traverse City man. His car had been eastbound on 11th Street, turning north onto Cass Street. The driver stated he failed to see the pedestrians and, upon turning left, struck the two pedestrians, a 50-year-old female and a 45-year-old male, both from Traverse City. The victims were transported to Munson Medical Center by Northflight ambulance. They suffered hip, shoulder and head injuries, none which were life threatening. The driver was citied in the accident for failing to yield to pedestrians in the intersection.
Vandalism
In other news, Traverse City police are investigating damage done at the historic Oakwood Cemetery located on East Eighth Street in Traverse City. Estimates on the damage – broken headstones and statues – are around $150,000.00. It appears that there was more than one vandal who is responsible for the damage. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Traverse City Police Department Detective Bureau at 231-995-5152 or the Silent Observer Tip Line at 231-947-TIPS (8477).
As someone who serves on a Cemetery Committee which works to preserve, improve and beautify our cemeteries, I am appalled that this senseless vandalism continues. The city of Gaylord just repaired stones in one of their historic cemeteries after similar vandalism. What can we do to ensure vandals are caught and punished for destruction of our most precious memories of loved ones?
To quote Archbishop John of Ireland for 1904 "Because of the sacredness of the cemetery and of the blessed memories it invokes we should be anxious to bestow upon it the care of love."
