A Traverse City police officer was injured in an assault that resulted in the arrested of a 24-year-old Traverse City man. What happened: On August 8, the department's Central Dispatch received numerous calls about an individual in the downtown area yelling obscenities at passing cars and attempting to grab their mirrors as they drove by. Police located the suspect and told him to stop. A female acquaintance of the suspect assured officers that she would take the subject home. Later, however, the suspect approached a TC police officer who was stationary in his car near Midtown Drive and Cass Street. The suspect hit the police car and yelled obscenities at the officer, then swung and hit the officer with a closed fist in the face as the officer attempted to exit the car. The suspect was taken to Munson Medical Center, where he was evaluated for his toxicity levels, as well as abrasions he suffered during the altercation. He was medically cleared by doctors at Munson, then transported to the Grand Traverse County jail, where he was lodged on charges of assault and battery on a police officer and disorderly conduct.
How come this jerk was allowed to be released to the custody of "a female acquaintance" in the first place? If he'd been arrested for disturbing the peace and attempting to damage peoples' vehicles, the police officer wouldn't have been assaulted.
