To address concerns regarding the recent assaults on area trails, the Traverse Area Recreation and Transportation Trails group – aka TART Trails – is working with trail stakeholders, specifically along the Boardman Lake Trail and TART Trail at 3 Mile Road, to address concerns. The group reviewed existing efforts: regular patrols of the trails by Traverse City police officers, GT County Sheriff's Department safety programs, Goodwill outreach and services, and programming efforts like the TART Trail Ambassador program, in which frequent trail users are trained to answer questions, report maintenance issues, and present a watchful eye along the trail. And they worked to identify specific limitations and service gaps, plus steps that can be taken to address them. Some of the future efforts proposed by the group: improved communication between law enforcement, TART and trail neighbors, personal safety programs, improved maintenance and upkeep along the trails, and public awareness events.
