Take a Tour of "Unrestored" Building 50

The final portion of Building 50, planned for reconstruction this spring, is now available for guided tours for a limited time along with the underground tunnels at The Village of Grand Traverse Commons. Tours kick off tomorrow (the first few Saturdays are already sold out) at 3 p.m. and are also offered Tuesdays at 11 a.m. The 90-minute tour guides participants through the original 1885 "North End" of the building that has sat untouched since the former State Hospital closed nearly 25 years ago. $25 per person, ages 12 and up only.

I've lived here my whole life. It's always been them that's got and them that's not. That's the kind of people this little city attracts anymore, and it is sad.

Just ridiculous to charge for this! I had this tour in 7th grade for free. Whoever decied to do this should reconsider. Why would people have to pay anyway? An insult to citizens.

Unfortunately, this is not the only over-priced thing in Traverse City. Also, since they are already sold out, I doubt they would lower the price to let more people be able to experience the history of Bldg. 50. So I offer a compromise... Summer "Fudgie Tours" at a rate of $25 and "Off-Season Tours" at a rate of $15.

What a great idea, unfortunately there is no way I can share this experience with my family. $75 on a fixed budget is way too steep! That is almost my weekly grocery budget. How sad you felt it necessary to charge so much to share a piece of Traverse City's history.

$25? I hope that includes lunch and a bottle of Left foot Charlie wine.

Sharon on March 17, 2013 1:21pm

You've got to be kidding...$25 for this tour??? We would love to do this tour but not at that price. Sounds like someone is trying to raise money like the political parties. At least you get a meal with those!

Karen on March 16, 2013 9:18am

It is sad that I just found out about the tour. So once again I miss out on it but $25? I could not afford it anyway. If you had more tours and cheaper you would make more money.

Sherri on March 16, 2013 8:01am

Glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks $25 is rather steep! But if it's going to further the restoration, that's a good thing. Have I missed something? I don't see who to contact to sign up for this. The article needs a phone #.

Come on $25.00 bucks no way..Lets have one day a week tour for us elders for about 5 dollars

Karen on March 15, 2013 2:36pm

I would love to see this also, as I have fond memories walking the tunnel from the State Hospital to Munson as a student nurse. However, we cannot afford the $25, on a fixed income. If you could lower the price, say to $5-10, many more would take advantage of seeing history. Please consider adding additional touring dates. Thank you & best wishes with the reconstruction.
