Ever heard of the Cherry Capital Guardians? They're the local chapter of the USNSCC Sea Cadet program, a national program for kids between the ages of 11 and 17 that, in cooperation with the U.S. Navel Department, gives kids a chance to learn leadership skills, self discipline, physical fitness and more through photography, scuba diving, aviation, construction, firefighting, seamanship and more. You can meet the local cadets, each one of whom has volunteered 40+ hours a year to community services – this Friday, October 19 at the St. Michaels Lutheran Church at Garfield and Centre Street. They're hosting a silent auction (think: spa packages, local artist paintings, scuba gear ...) and spaghetti dinner from 5:30 – 8:00 pm. All funds raised will help run the unit through the year and provide supplies, gear, training materials and/or fuel costs to get the cadets to trainings. Hear from the kid cadets here. And learn more about the local group and Friday's event at www.cherrycapitalguardians.com.
The U.S. has a Navel Department? No kidding! Moving toward a more contemplative culture, eh?
