Though you can no longer eat soul food in Traverse CIty following the recent closure of Soul Hole, you can watch a film all about it this Thursday, Jan. 3, at 7 p.m. Soul Food Junkies is both an historical and culinary journey about the soul food tradition and its relevance to black cultural identity. Filmmaker Byron Hurt conducts candid interviews with soul food cooks, historians, scholars and every day people, examining the culinary tradition's positive and negative consequences. The film is part of the Community Cinema Series presented by CMU Public Television at the Dennos Museum in Traverse City. Free. A panel discussion will follow the film.
I am sorry to see The Soul Hole close as it was one of my favorites. Its passing has eliminated the essential "barbecue" tier on my food pyramid.
