How can Traverse City build parking garages you want visitors to use at a cost of millions without bathrooms. After traveling hours to get here visitors have to walk 4 blocks let alone find the visitors and convention building. Maybe put porta pottys outside them. That would show how people friendly Traverse City is.

Public bathrooms need to be convenient and signs directing people to them. I think portable ones are "tacky" for a city like TC that is being voted "best" of so many things in national magazines. We have 2 parking garages and the Lot O. Instead of dawdling over where the train goes, make a decision about bathrooms and get moving. Please don't use the US Congress as an example.

Do they make handicap accessible portable restrooms? And give some consideration to strategically placed facilities! Don't be looking solely at the cost - offset it with public spending. Look at what happens in the real world in TC not what you think it is.

As a former business owner, we had one very small bathroom. We did post a sign "restroom for patrons only" because we were incurring the expense of maintaining the restroom and if everyone off the street were to use it without making a purchase, it was not to our benefit. I have traveled all over TC with small children seeking bathrooms and it should be at the city expense if they want traffice downtown.

please remember that not all people can walk down to the Chamber building or the waterfront when shopping and when a kids gotta go, a kids gotta go. Try to be understanding and friendly to young and older in this decision. What age group spends the most money downtown!

Did you say the Tourist and Convention Center does NOT have public bathrooms?

There is $1 million in the Sara Hardy Parking Deck fund. Take some of that and a few spaces and put in public restrooms. Deck staff could maintain them. Operation hours would be longer.

I thought there was a public restroom in the "Arcade". I seem to remember one when it was newly built. Same with Front Row Center. I think give the merchants some incentive to open their restrooms to those shopping. Horizon's is the BEST. Their restrooms are always open and almost always very well stocked and ready for thoe who need it. Porta-potties ARE nasty! When I'm at the Open Space during Cherry Fest, I walk to Horizon's.

There used to be public restroom until people became inconsiderate of the facilities;damaging and vandalizing them. Now,go home and use your own

If the merchants would agree to allow their restrooms to be used by the public, that would be the simplest solution it seems. I am downtown a great deal and speak with the merchants often. Most of them are friendly and agreeable and I believe would warm to that idea, IF they were compensated and helped in maintaining the restrooms. Service is the #1 aspect of shopping downtown and visitors would sing the praises of any downtown merchant who would comply with this idea.

It should be a given that if you want people to come downtown you need to offer them SOMEWHERE to use the restroom. It's a human bodily function..it's not like people have a choice on whether to go or not. I've had visitor's mention to me that TC comes off as snobbish since we advertise as being the best at everything but make it a stressful endeavor just to find a bathroom. Horizon Books have been very gracious in this area but they shouldn't be the only one supplying this necessity. We always shop there just for the simple fact that they offer this NECESSARY service.

I like the idea of incorporating the public restrooms into the Cherry Republic Building.

Parking garages are logical locations for public bathrooms, as are any new developments. It would be ideal to have public restrooms within each block of every business district(Downtown, Old Town, West End, etc.)

Went through this battle is Glen Arbor. How can we be "The Most Beautiful Place in America" and not offer toliets? Glen Arbor developed a beautiful garden surrounding a well designed public toliet with seperate male/female and family sections. The discussion went on too long and was very heated at times, but what we ended up with is truly an asset to our community! If we are to be a true tourist destination, we need to be hospitable to our visitors. Remove the "Do Nothing" option off the table and find a way to make public toliets a reality-ASAP!

I have moved back to traverse city 2.5 years ago. I find it truely AMAZING that a town that has so many festivals and encourages increased tourist activity would have so little restrooms.

There should be public facilities available. Horizon Books is the only facility in all of the downtown area and it probably is an unfair burden.

As a long time customer of fabulous local business, Horizon Books, I am extremely disappointed that their public restroom friendly policy was not featured in this article. This was an excellent opportunity to showcase an asset that does so much for our community in many realms: full age range product and activities, meeting space, entertainment, highest quality of service. Other stores when asked always send shoppers to Horizon!

I agree with Mary,Lot O would be a great place for a restroom/park like they have in Glen Arbor.

I believe purchasing space in the Cherry Republic Bldg if possible would be the best option. The city would own it. It would remove the fickleness of business owners as some may sell or change their minds at a future date. It removes the need to build a restroom or purchase the self cleaning toilets which could become blight issues either now or in the future. Doing nothing is really a poor option.

Both Saugatuck and Manistee have nice facilities in the middle of town. The structure size varies by town size. I would imagine both city taxes and DDA (TIF?) money would be needed. There would have to be someone there to service them hourly in the summer but less often in the winter and they would have to be closed at night. Those very cool self-cleaning units in Europe have their drawbacks, I've read, but surely this town can get it done somehow. It is essential.

Perhaps merchant compensation could be in the form of a good citizen awards posted in the local news? Post good merchant citizen restroom maps downtown. The Chamber building should become restroom friendly? Impose a special assessment tax only on merchants that do not open there restrooms to the public? DDA could maintain an "Out House" blog to praise the public friendly and remind the unfriendly of there opportunity to change? The blog could also mine other opportunities for the DDA?

$200,000 for a toilet?????? My whole house didn't cost nearly that much! Sounds like another fraudulent scheme to make someone a lot of money.

Seriously? After all these years Traverse City finally has an opportunity for permanent public restrooms and we are actually considering passing on the Cherry Republic complex?

This has been a problem for a very long time in TC...Downtown wants to host all these great events and have people shop down there, they need public restrooms! For the people that live here we know where we can find one if needed, but the tourist have a terrible time! On practically every store door is a sign stating no public restrooms....get with it TC...

As someone who has worked in the downtown area over the years I think restrooms have been needed since the close of Milliken's. Perhaps a combination of ideas is best. Most stores do not have sufficient space or ability to offer public facilities. These are old buildings. But those that do, should be offered a benefit. Public restrooms should be required/offered in the new Cherry Republic building and possibly any new development. As a proffesional in the building trade I can't see how the cost of $200,000 portable toilets is beneficial. Give someone a job to do the maintanance. |
