For the first time in more than 35 years, Michigan’s oldest community college has an official nickname: the Hawk Owls. The Northwestern Michigan College Board of Trustees unanimously voted to formally adopt Hawk Owls as the college’s nickname at their meeting Feb. 25.
NMC hasn't used a nickname since it last competed in intercollegiate sports in 1976. The college’s iconic tree logo will not change and there are no plans to reinstate intercollegiate athletics, says the Public Relations and Marketing department, but NMC has "reclaimed a little bit of missing identity."
Next steps include creation of an official graphical representation of the NMC Hawk Owl and development of plans to create a mascot.
A mascot for what? "We're the mis-guided hard to transfer studies of TC?" What a waste of time and money.. Stick with the "Tomahawks", Bring real sports and not soccer!! Well maybe for women, since they are more competitive.. Get football going and men's and women's basketball and women's softball too.. Oh gee you might have to spend some money. Is it local control good old boys that keeps you from being a 4 year school? And ditch the "Hooter Hawks" thing, it's terrible!
