Munson is making strides on its planned campus expansion and development of its new cancer center. Underway now: The moving of 30-year-old Sixth Street Drugs next door to 1020 Sixth Street. That move is needed to make way for the ongoing restoration of Kid’s Creek and will be complete by the end of September. Steve Tongue, Munson's vice president of facilities and engineering tells The Ticker that the hospital has been making efforts, pre-expansion, to decompress its campus – and reduce neighborhood traffic, a major complaint of folks living in the neighborhoods around Munson's campus. Earlier this summer Munson moved off campus several departments that don't provide direct clinical support to the hospital. Munson's information systems department was the first to move over to offices in the Copper Ridge complex, and by October, the central scheduling department, patience accounts and others will be following suit. "We have a litte bit of room for growth, a little bit of shelf space there to keep decompressing," he says. "The good news is there some flexibility for more." He adds that work is also underway to restore building 29, one of the cottages at The Village at Grand Traverse Commons, which will house the Munson Healthcare Regional Foundation, the facilities, planning and performance improvement departments, as well as conference and training rooms.
