The Michigan Retailers Association and a group of state lawmakers have introduced legislation to help "level the playing field" between Michigan businesses and out-of-state, online-only merchants who are currently not required to collect the 6 percent sales tax on goods sold to Michigan consumers. Supporters of the Main Street Fairness legislation say the loophole damages the economy by costing jobs and tax revenue, and results from the recent holiday shopping season show the problem is only getting worse.
