Local Stories, Authors Earn Accolades

Fishtown: Leland, Michigan's Historic Fishery has been selected as a 2013 Michigan Notable Book by the Library of Michigan, one of 20 titles to make the list spotlighting Michigan people, places and events. Written by Laurie Kay Sommers, a freelance folklorist and historic preservation consultant based in Okemos, the book details Fishtown's past and present and depicts a Fishtown that few but the fishermen and ferry captains have seen. The book is available at local bookstores, at the Fishtown Preservation Society office in Leland and online. For a complete list of 2013 Notable books, including those by well-known Michigan writers Jack Driscoll and Jack and Dave Dempsey, visit michigan.gov/libraryofmichigan.
