Local Boat Builders Assist Whaleboat Project

The Maritime Heritage Alliance in Traverse City is a partner in the restoration of the Charles W. Morgan, the oldest commercial sailing ship in the U.S. and the last sail-driven whaling ship in the world. It is assisting the Great Lakes Boat Building School in Lake Huron's Les Cheneaux Islands in building one of seven traditional wooden whaleboats for the ship. The completed whaleboat will make a stop in Traverse City on June 20 as it travels to its eventual home onboard the Morgan in Mystic, Ct.

It's nearly unbelievable that a boat so small could master an ocean and a whale so large! A miracle that any whalers came home from their years at sea.
