Library Makes it Tougher for Overdue Offenders to Borrow
October 26, 2012
In an effort to collect on long overdue fines, the Traverse Area District Library will reduce the threshold fine at which a patron is blocked from borrowing library materials from $25 to $5, effective December 1, 2012.
I think more people will end up using the library because the items they want will be available. Items will have been returned in a timely fashion, by their due date! The lending policy is pretty liberal. But, it is easy to rack up $5 in overdue fines. I guess that's part of being a responsible library user.

What this does is make it more likely that people will not use the library for their literary needs. We have a donation based system in my community that I don't hesitate to fund if I am overdue on materials but I have stopped getting materials at Traverse City due to the nature of their lack of hospitable social skills. The rule they have created have made it unwelcoming to diversity.
