Overflow emergency 911 calls during busy times for Grand Traverse County will likely be routed through Leelanau County in the near future. Kalkaska County has been the backup for decades.
Leelanau is being chosen because of staffing levels and because of long-term plans between Leelanau and Grand Traverse to further integrate radio systems and computer data between the two, says Jason Torrey, deputy director of GT 911.
The change was proposed by the Public Health and Safety Committee and will be up for final approval by the county in May, pending a public hearing process.
