On Saturday night, a 21-year-old Traverse City man – with a blood alcohol content of .193 – raced down East Front Street at a speed witnesses estimated to be between 60 and 70 m.p.h. Perhaps not surprisingly, he plowed into a Cherry Capital Taxi Cab that was moving south through the intersection on Union Street at East Front Street. The driver of the cab, a 29-year-old Traverse City man, and the cab’s back seat passengers, two 22-year-old TC women, were transported to Munson Medical Center via Northflight ambulance with non-life threatening injuries ranging from lacerations to concussions and broken bones. One of the occupants suffered a broken back. The driver of the at-fault vehicle was not injured in the accident; he was arrested for three counts of Operating While Intoxicated causing injury (a five-year felony), a high B.A.C., and for operating without insurance. He is currently in the Grand Traverse County jail awaiting arraignment. Driver's car pictured at left; cab pictured below.
