Demolition on Hotel Indigo to Begin March 11

Demolition on Hotel Indigo to Begin March 11

Demolition will begin on the long-awaited Hotel Indigo on March 11, according to Grand Traverse Hotel Properties, LLC, the Grand Traverse County Brownfield Redevelopment Authority, and the Traverse City Downtown Development Authority.

The $15 million project, located on Grandview Parkway, will require significant environmental remediation work. "Without the assistance of the Grand Traverse County Brownfield Redevelopment Authority in financing the environmental work that needs to be conducted at this site, this project would simply not work at all," said Grand Traverse Hotel Properties Managing Member Jeff Schmitz.

The hotel will consist of 105 rooms, conference facilities, a health spa, pool, restaurant, lounges (including a rooftop lounge overlooking West End Beach and the Open Space), and 79 underground parking spaces.

I am so thrilled that a Hotel Indigo is coming to town, and ridding TC of its biggest eyesore. How people can possible complain about something like this boggles the mind. I agree with Terry, Make that rooftop lounge epic, and a connector under/over the parkway is essential. I wish someone would post what the newest rendering looks like. I hope they keep it light and modern and don't kowtow to the curmudgeons who want everything to look like a square brick factory building. This is called progress people. Enjoy it.

The average consumer cannot afford to stay at Hotel Indigo, so only the wealthy will benefit from this new venture, however it does remove the eyesore and parking will always be a problem downtown!!

MAYBE there are going to be 26 parking spots above ground in the parking lot not included in the numbers for the actual structure???

You got that right, John. Obviously, they are either never planning for the hotel to reach full occupancy, plus employees, plus shoppers, or they are expecting residents to flip the bill for another parking deck in that area for the assured lack of parking created by this project.

How could any project receive approval with 105 rooms & more, yet only have 79 parking spaces?

This is GREAT news. That corner is one of the few eyesores in town...the fact that it will house a new, modern building for tourists as well as locals to enjoy is even better. This city is so caught up in the past, Indigo will be a breath of fresh air. 2 birds with 1 stone= remove harmful contaminants at the site and build a unique new building in place of and old dumpy one. LOVE IT.

I don't know how anyone can say negative things about revitalizing a slummy area of town! Many people who come to TC want to stay in downtown and walk to everything. There are not very many choices like that right now. The warehouse district is going to be a great place, and The Indigo Hotel sounds wonderful. This is a very exciting addition to Traverse City!

Wait till the guest get an earful of the sirens and road noise from the parkway.. what a joke of a design!!! There was a wonderful plan designed and forwarded by a local designer and former planning commissioner for this entire area. The city loved it, then turned their back on it while giving approval to this bad idea. Does TC have a real planner or just the appearance of one?

may be first class with low paying jobs.....big deal more money for the rich trickle down economics sucks

TR on March 6, 2013 10:17am

Gee Jon. maybe the hotel will pay taxes , which will support the schools, which will educate the children, who will learn to view the world as an opportunity. And maybe the hotel will employ people so they may live the decent lives they choose. and maybe the guests will spend money at other local businesses that employ people and pay taxes.Or leave it an out of business muffler shop.

over 100 rooms....but only 79 parking spots? How does that work? I would hate to be there Cherry Festival week when its already hard to park in town.
