City Commish Decisions: Fireworks, Street Vendors, History Center

City Commish Decisions: Fireworks, Street Vendors, History Center

Some highlights from last night's Traverse City City Commission meeting: First, a ban on the ignition of consumer fireworks that leave the ground (i.e. Roman Candles and Bottle Rockets) in the city beyond the scope of national holidays, a three-day period that is protected by state law (Note: low-impact fireworks, including sparklers, snakes and the like are still legal). Second, reduction of the daily fee for transient food merchants to $50 outside of the DDA district (the fee remains $100 daily inside the district). However, an ad hoc committee comprised of commissioners and local restauranteurs is being formed to address long-term regulations and fee structures citywide for these transient businesses. Contact the City Clerk if you're interested in participating. Also last night, the city agreed to enact an amendment to the TIF 2 financing district that will extend its boundaries to include the History Center of Traverse City so the historical organization now can apply for TIF funding for capital and operational expenditures.

Great to see the inclusion of the History Center and the impact of access to these dollars!

Having street vendors is a great thing that adds variety and character to our city and they should be encouraged to participate. Yes, there should be some regulation, but I think the fees are way out of line. Look at other comparable cities and what they charge, often a one-time yearly fee.

I also think it's ridiculous to have the ad hoc committee made up of local restaurant owners, the ones most against the street vendors.

Street vendors make a downtown more vibrant which results in a desirable location to visit and spend money. There should not be a $50 upcharge in the downtown area versus other city locations. $100 and $50 are ridiculous daily amounts to be charged to vendors. The council should represent all residents not just the downtown business people in making decisions.
