Cherry Festival 2013 Dates Announced

Mark your calendars. National Cherry Festival organizers have selected the official dates of the 2013 National Cherry Festival: the 87th annual fest will kick off on Saturday, June 29. “The City of Traverse City requested that the National Cherry Festival consider setting its 2013 dates to include the Fourth of July. Many community members and out of town guests have an expectation that the National Cherry Festival will be open during the Fourth," says Trevor Tkach, Festival Executive Director. "We agreed that their request seemed logical." Also back together again: The Festival Foundation and National Cherry Festival will again work closely with the non-profit Boom Boom Club, which secured Fourth of July fireworks funding in 2012, to provide the necessary components needed to produce the 2013 fireworks.

We are an area in an economic struggle, business's going bankrupt, people out of work, and very little part time work for students. We need EVERY opportunity to make money for our community. I don't recall a public meeting allowing the TRUE PUBLIC to speak. Why consolidate money making opportunities? Unless the Festival committee's only goal is attendance. Obviously it'll be high, but the missing piece is what we are losing by this change? Is it really worth it? Take a look at some downtown shops' year end reports and go from there. If you TRULY care about Traverse City and it's residents!

You never seem to have Michigan Cherries ready in early July, why would you move the Festival to June?

I made a reservation at Clinch Park Marina without the knowledge of the festival being a week early. I have always planned for the second week of July. I am extemely dissapointed with the lack of consideration on the part of the people responsible for this poor decission.

As a local business owner I agree with the comments about keeping the Cherry Festival separate from the 4th of July Holiday. Ideally we would like to keep a steady flow of tourists and business to our area. Combining a festival with a holiday potentially overloads hotels, restaurants, streets and shops etc. If we have to turn people away or are unable to give them the customer service they deserve why would they come at all? This also puts stress on the locals who have to endure the crowds and traffic.

Rubbish! What are the chances local cherry growers will have sweets ready for tourists at the end of June again in 2013? Does The National Cherry Festival really represent the interests of local cherry growers anymore? How many people on the board of "The City of Traverse City" are actually cherry growers? What about the downtown merchants that rely on the 2 week bump in business?

I have always known it to be the 1st Saturday in July to the 2nd no matter what the dates. I agree that people will visit regardless of Cherry Festival or not...why not spread it out? I believe this will just add more congestion to the downtown and make it less appealing to come down for fireworks on the 4th. I hope all the tourists who have already made reservations in hotels and cottage rentals will be contacted.

tammy...you're right. tc is the "city of festivals". the 4th has nothing to do with our celebration of cherries. i personally can't remember a Cherry Festival in June....surprised the change was made without public input.

Tammy on September 5, 2012 9:13am

People visit Traverse City on the 4th of July regardless if it is Cherry Festival or not. If we have the opportunity to have tourists visit us at different times throughout the summer...shouldn't we? Cherry Festival is about cherries. We should celebrate when our local growers have cherries.

It has been during the week of the 4th before it was the 2nd week like last year. so it's not early, it is back on schedule like in the past
