$650k Verdict One of Leelanau's Largest

A teenager injured in an accident on a Leelanau County cherry farm in 2011 has received one of the largest jury awards in county history – $650,000. Attorney R. Jay Hardin of Smith Haughey Rice & Roegge in Traverse City represented client Colton Brooks in the lawsuit against Stanton Orchards in Lake Leelanau. At the time of the accident, Brooks was volunteering on the farm and driving a piece of equipment with "little to no training," according to the news release announcing the verdict. The client's leg was broken and he has experienced additional complications since the accident. The award is intended to cover past and future health care costs and past and future pain and suffering.
